Shanghai Project Announces Hans Ulrich Obrist and Yongwoo Lee as Its Artistic Codirectors

Hans Ulrich Obrist, codirector of London’s Serpentine Galleries, and Yongwoo Lee, director of the Shanghai Himalayas Museum, have been appointed artistic codirectors of the Shanghai Project, a new biennial event that “is an ideas platform which takes as its starting point the notion of a culture and knowledge ‘emporium,’ a shared time and space for people to gather, procure, and exchange culture and knowledge.”

The first iteration of the Shanghai Project, titled “2116,” is based on the year that “76 percent of greater Shanghai’s current population [will] live in areas. . . submerged underwater” if “no action is taken to curb emissions and the Earth continues to warm at its present rate,” according to a recent report done by the science news group Climate Central.

“2116” is scheduled to take place at the Shanghai Himalayas Center on September 5 through November 13, 2016.
