SHARJAH BIENNIAL ANNOUNCES CROSS-NATIONAL PROGRAMMING FOR THIRTEENTH EDITION

To be curated by Christine Tohmé, the thirteenth edition of the Sharjah Biennial will span five cities—Beirut, Dakar, Istanbul, Ramallah, and Sharjah—for a year of programming. The biennial is subtitled “Tamawuj,” an Arabic word meaning a swelling, surging, or fluctuation. This week sees the launch of the SB13 School, a yearlong educational program in Sharjah, as well as the start of a digital research platform titled “Chip-ship.”

An off-site project in Dakar centered on the theme of water will open on January 8, 2017, and the main exhibition, titled “Act I,” will open in Sharjah on March 10. On May 13, an off-site project in Istanbul focusing on the theme of crops will open, and on August 10 a project in Ramallah with the theme of earth will open. On October 15, 2017, the last off-site project will open in Beirut with a culinary theme. The Sharjah Biennial 13 “Act II,” featuring the final exhibitions and programs, begins on October 19, 2017, in Beirut.

Four “interlocutors” have been named to work with researchers in each city: artist Kader Attia; curators Lara Khaldi and Zeynep Oz; and the Lebanese Association for Plastic Arts, Ashkal Alwan.
