Smithsonian Closes Museum Spaces Due to Sequestration

The Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., has announced the closure of some of its spaces due to a $42 million budget cut, reports David Ng of the Los Angeles Times. Specifically, it has initiated the reduction of the museums’ security staff, causing closures at three of its locations: part of the Hirshhorn Museum’s permanent collection galleries, a permanent exhibition at the National Museum of African Art, and the Commons space at the Smithsonian Castle. The closures began yesterday and will continue through September 30, 2013.
