Sotheby’s to Open New Mumbai Office

Sotheby’s will be opening a new office in Mumbai, according to Artnet’s Eileen Kinsella. Robin Woodhead, chairman of Sotheby’s International, is announcing the development, along with news that Edward Gibbs has been named chairman of Sotheby’s India, Middle East, North Africa, and Priyanka Mathew is being hired as regional director of Sotheby’s India.

“By opening an office in India, the company will be able to increase the scale and scope of its activities in the country and support a full calendar of events, talks, exhibitions, and charity sales,” said Sotheby’s. The auction house also claimed that the value of purchases by made by Sotheby’s Indian clients has increased by 42 percent per year, on average, over the past half decade.

“Sotheby’s was the first international auction house to hold an auction in India, a sale of Indian, European, and Oriental paintings that took place in October 1992,” notes Kinsella.
