Stefan Kalmár, who has headed Kunstverein München for the past four and a half years, has been appointed the director of Artists Space in New York. At Kunstverein München, Kalmár was responsible for exhibitions such as “The Secret Public: The Last Days of the British Underground 1978–1988” and the Liam Gillick retrospective conceived in cooperation with Witte de With, Kunsthalle Zurich, and the MCA Chicago. He also participated in the founding and programming of Ludlow 38 in New York. Artists Space was founded in 1972 with the purpose of providing a new forum for emerging artists that were marginalized by the market and institutional canon. Since then, it has been home to numerous exhibitions, perhaps most notably Douglas Crimp’s “Pictures” in 1977.
