A series of exhibitions are being organized to support the building of a new national contemporary art museum on the site of a defense headquarters in Seoul, Iris Moon reports in the Korea Herald. Cultural figures, gallery owners, and artists have gathered together to raise money and support for the construction of a new National Museum of Contemporary Art on the site of the Defense Security Command, a disused fortified complex in an upscale neighborhood. The project’s supporters emphasize that the site’s central location would help to draw the public and foreign audiences’ attention. They also emphasize that building an art museum on the site of a defense agency in the heart of Seoul would have symbolic resonances, signaling the end of oppressive rule in contemporary Korean society.
