Susan Hauptman, Hair Self Portrait with Dog, 2001

Susan Hauptman (1947–2015)

Artist Susan Hauptman has passed away. Forum Gallery confirmed the news. A graduate of the University of Michigan and Wayne State University in Detroit, Hauptman became known for self-portraits and still-lifes in charcoal on paper that often portrayed androgenous-looking versions of herself and confronted notions of the female ideal.

Her work’s in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Corcoran Gallery, Washington, DC, among other venues, and she was recipient of grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Pollock-Krasner Foundation.

Hauptman was the Lamar-Dodd Professorial Chair at the University of Georgia from 1997 through 2000.
