Tala Madani Wins 2013 Catherine Doctorow Prize for Contemporary Painting

Tala Madani has been awarded the 2013 Catherine Doctorow prize for contemporary painting. Given by the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art and the Jarvis and Constance Doctorow Family Foundation, the prize is worth fifteen thousand dollars and comes with a solo exhibition at the institution. The Los Angeles-based, Iranian-born artist “creates drawings, paintings, and animations depicting humorously grotesque scenarios of male vulnerability and fraternal idiocy,” notes a press release. It adds that it is precisely this “dedication to a visionary practice in painting that exemplifies the spirit” of this award. Said interim director Maggie Willis: “The engaging quality of Tala Madani’s work is certain to initiate dialogue among our visitors; I am thrilled that UMOCA will present Madani’s work this fall.”
