Ten full-time professors who joined the Corcoran’s art school around the time that it became controlled by George Washington University will not be seeing their contracts renewed, according to the Washington Post’s Peggy McGlone. Student enrollment has plummeted 24 percent since August 2014, when the university took over the school. At the time, the Corcoran was struggling financially, and a judge ruled that the National Gallery of Art would gain custody of the Corcoran Gallery of Art’s collection.
The faculty members who aren’t seeing their contracts renewed “will receive a one-year severance package and are being recommended for emeritus status with the university,” notes McGlone.
It’s not all bad news at the school, however. Director Sanjit Sethi revealed that artist Mel Chin has been named the inaugural William Wilson Corcoran Visiting Professor of Community Engagement, a new position established by the Corcoran’s trustees.
