The 9th Berlin Biennale Announces List of Venues

The Berlin Biennale has revealed its list of main venues at which works will be displayed for this year's ninth edition. The locations include the Akademie der Künste, the European School of Management and Technology, the Feuerle Collection, the Blue-Star sightseeing boat by Reederei Riedel, and KW Institute for Contemporary Art.

The New York-based collective DIS, composed of Lauren Boyle, Solomon Chase, Marco Roso, and David Toro, is the team that was selected to curate this year's exhibitions. The biennale intends to expose paradoxes that seem apparent in the year 2016, such as “the virtual as the real, nations as brands, people as data, culture as capital, wellness as politics, and happiness as GDP.” The venues were chosen for their “whiff of contemporary ‘paradessenece’ (paradox+essence).”

Since the inaugural biennale in 1998, Berlin has been known for its unique choice of venues. The eighth edtion’s included the Haus am Waldsee in Zehlendorf and the Museen Dahlem. According to Christian Rattemeyer's “Various Venues,” the biennale has made the “use of vacant, unusual or historically important spaces its hallmark.”

The ninth Berlin Biennale will take place from June 4 until September 18, 2016.
