THIEVES STEAL $1.5 MILLION IN ANTIQUES FROM FORBIDDEN CITY

According to Peter Foster in the Daily Telegraph, thieves have managed to pull off a heist in Beijing’s Forbidden City, stealing antique jewelry boxes worth a total of $1.5 million. They managed to elude over 1,600 antitheft alarms and 3,700 closed-circuit television cameras. The seven stolen items were on loan in a traveling exhibition from the Liangyicang Museum in Hong Kong, which only had an insurance policy on the objects for $50,000 because “no one had thought a thief could break into the Forbidden City,” according to Foster.
