Threewalls Appoints New Executive Director

The Chicago arts nonprofit Threewalls has appointed art historian and curator Jeffreen M. Hayes as their new executive director. She joins the organization following the departure earlier this year of founding executive director Shannon R. Stratton, who became chief curator at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York. Hayes earned a Ph.D. in american studies from the College of William and Mary, a master’s in art history from Howard University, and a bachelor’s in humanities from Florida International University. She has worked for several museums and cultural institutions, including the Hampton University Museum, the Library of Congress, and the National Gallery of Art.

Hayes has also held fellowships at Ithaca College in the art history department and in the cartoon and caricature division at the Library of Congress as a Swann Foundation fellow, in addition to a Andrew W. Mellon post-doctoral curatorial fellowship at the Birmingham Museum of Art in Birmingham, Alabama from January 2012 through June 2013. During her tenure there, Hayes organized performance art projects and the exhibition “Etched in Collective History,” commemorating Birmingham’s civil rights history.
