The Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation has announced six hundred thousand dollars in awards today, marking its sixteenth biennial competition. Established in 1918, the foundation remains one of the largest single sources of unrestricted monetary awards to artists.
Thirty unrestricted grants, each in the amount of twenty thousand dollars, have been awarded to artists residing in the United States and working in the fields of painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, crafts, and video. Angela Westwater, president of the foundation, commented, “Our trustees remain committed to supporting talented artists, and in so doing commemorate our founder, Louis Comfort Tiffany, and his artistic legacy.”
The recipients were chosen from a list of more than four hundred names gathered by nomination. A panel of artists, critics, and museum professionals from across the country convened over a two-day period to review applications. Candidates were evaluated based on the quality and serious promise of their work, and consideration was also given to the amount of critical or commercial recognition their careers have yet received. “The timing of this grant makes a huge difference,” writes recipient Matt Saunders. “It will let me pursue immediately some ideas I thought weren’t possible.”
