Tim Etchells, visual artist, dramaturge, and artistic director of the UK-based theater collective Forced Entertainment, has been given the 2016 Spalding Gray Award. Etchells is being given a $20,000 commission for a new work with Forced Entertainment called Real Magic, a piece “…about the traps we live in and the possibilities of escape. Exploring story and the absence of a story, Real Magic mixes text, music, image, movement and silence—noise and the transformation of that noise.”
The award will also cover all costs of production for every venue it travels to: The Andy Warhol Museum, Performance Space 122, Seattle’s On the Boards, and the Walker Art Center (organizations who are also sponsors of the award, in addition to Kathleen Russo, Gray’s widow).
