The New York Times reports that Artforum editor-at-large Tim Griffin has been appointed executive director and chief curator of The Kitchen, the nonprofit experimental arts venue on West Nineteenth Street in New York. In September, Griffin will replace Debra Singer, who has been director and chief curator of the Kitchen since 2004. Singer announced her intentions to resign and spend more time with her family in January.
“The board is delighted to welcome Tim to the helm of The Kitchen,” Chris Ahearn, president of The Kitchen’s board, said. “With his unique perspective and extensive knowledge of the performing and visual arts scenes, we all look forward to his dynamic programming across the disciplines for The Kitchen in the years ahead.”
Griffin said: “It is thrilling to have this opportunity to join The Kitchen, whose illustrious history and deep commitments to dance, music, performance, and visual art give the institution a singular position in the increasingly interdisciplinary landscape of the arts today. I am both excited and honored to play this role in The Kitchen’s continued growth as a catalyzing and cross-fertilizing platform for artists creating the next generation of work in New York.”
