The Calder Foundation and the Scone Foundation have announced that the 2009 Calder Prize will be awarded to Argentinean artist Tomas Saraceno during the week of the opening of the Venice Biennale. The prize, in the amount of fifty thousand dollars, honors contemporary artists who have completed exemplary work early in their careers. In addition to the cash prize, the recipient benefits from the facilitation of the gift of one of his signature works to a major public collection.
Previous winners of the prize include Tara Donovan (2005), who was also named a MacArthur Fellow last year. In 2007, Bernard Kouchner, French minister of foreign and European affairs, awarded the prize to Zilvinas Kempinas, who will represent Lithuania at this year’s Biennale.
