TURNER PRIZE ANNOUNCES 2017 NOMINEES
The artists shortlisted for the 2017 Turner Prize—an award given annually to a contemporary artist either born in Britain or one who primarily lives and works there—have been announced today. They are Andrea Büttner, Rosalind Nashashibi, Hurvin Anderson, and Lubaina Himid. The prize comes with a cash award worth more than $51,000. The winner will receive about $32,000 from the pot. The rest of the money will be evenly divided between the three other artists on the shortlist.
In March, Tate Britain announced that it would be doing away with the rule that only artists under fifty years of age were eligible for the prize. Indeed, this is reflected by the current nominees, as Anderson is fifty-two and Himid is sixty-two (Büttner is forty-five, while Nashashibi is forty-three).
This year’s exhibition for the nominated artists will take place at the Ferens Art Gallery in Hull. The winner of the prize will be announced on a live BBC broadcast on December 5, 2017.
