Organizers of the Turner Prize have named the four artists competing for the thirty-seven-thousand-dollar award, given annually to a British artist under fifty. The San Francisco Chronicle reports that the finalists are Roger Hiorns, Enrico David, Lucy Skaer, and Richard Wright.
Sculptor Roger Hiorns famously deployed thousands of gallons of liquid copper sulfate to turn a derelict London apartment into a cavern of blue crystals. Visitors had to wear protective clothing to visit the work, titled Seizure. Enrico David, an Italian-born artist, creates installations, sculptures, and drawings inspired by everything from traditional crafts to twentieth-century Surrealism. Lucy Skaer makes drawings, sculptures, and films and often incorporates found photos, while Richard Wright is a painter who cites architecture as a source of inspiration for his pieces.
The Turner Prize was established in 1984 to honor young artists. Last year’s winner was Mark Leckey. An exhibition of work by this year’s finalists opens at Tate Britain on October 7. The winner will be announced December 7.
