Ural Biennale Names João Ribas as Curator and Announces Theme of 4th Edition

The Ural Industrial Biennale has announced that João Ribas, deputy director and chief curator of the Museum of Contemporary Art Serralves in Porto, Portugal, will curate the 2017 exhibition, which will explore the theme of “Image as a witness / Capitalist choreography / Resist the word.”

Ribas previously served as the curator of the MIT List Visual Arts Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts, from 2009 to 2013 and as a curator at the Drawing Center in New York from 2007 to 2009. He is a four-time winner of the International Association of Art Critics award for the best exhibition, and he has received the Emily Hall Tremaine Award for the best exhibition in 2010. He has taught at numerous universities, including Yale University, the School of Visual Arts in New York, and the Rhode Island School of Design. He is a contributing writer to various publications, such as Artforum, Artnews, The Exhibitionist, and Frieze.

The Ural Industrial Biennale is organized by Russia’s National Center for Contemporary Arts and will be held from September 14 to November 12, 2017.
