VALIE EXPORT Awarded the 2019 Roswitha Haftmann Prize

The board of the Roswitha Haftmann Foundation has selected Austrian artist VALIE EXPORT as the winner of the 2019 Roswitha Haftmann Prize, in recognition of her life’s work. She is the nineteenth artist to receive the honor, which comes with a monetary prize of more than $150,000, and will be celebrated at an award ceremony at the Kunsthaus Zürich in September.

The Vienna-based filmmaker, photographer, and performance artist participated in Documenta 6 in 1977 and Documenta 12 in 2007, and represented Austria at the Venice Biennale, alongside fellow Roswitha Haftmann Prize winner Maria Lassnig, in 1980. She has also held professorships at universities of the arts in Wisconsin, Berlin, and Cologne.

In the 2012 issue of Artforum, Brigitte Huck wrote: “VALIE EXPORT’s trailblazing work has long been considered central to contemporary art history. It is characterized by her militant stance, her penetrating analysis of society, politics, and culture, and her fundamental belief in the alterability of prevailing power relationships.”

The prize jury was made up of Christoph Becker, director of the Kunsthaus Zürich; Josef Helfenstein, director of the Kunstmuseum Basel; Nina Zimmer, director of Zentrum Paul Klee, Bern, Switzerland; Yilmaz Dziewior, director of the Museum Ludwig, Cologne; Karola Kraus, director of the Museum Moderne Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien, Vienna; Bernhart Schwenk, curator at the Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich; and journalist Thomas Wagner.
