Vera List Center Prize Goes to Abounaddara, a Syrian Filmmaking Collective

Randy Kennedy reports in the New York Times that the Syrian filmmaking collective, Abounaddara, has won the Vera List Center Prize for Art and Politics. The members of the group—whose name means “man in glasses” in Arabic—make short films about life in Syria that they post to Vimeo. The prize recognizes work that furthers the goals of social justice, and will afford the group $15,000 plus long-term academic support from the New School in New York. The group’s work appeared at the New Museum this summer in “Here and Elsewhere,” and its film Of God and Dogs (2014) won the Sundance Short Film Grand Jury Prize this year. Speaking to The Guardian, a member of the group said, “We have no choice but to use the aesthetics of cinema to produce a form of counter-information.”
