VIA Art Fund Names Recipients of $700,000 in Grants

VIA Art Fund announced today the 2018 recipients of $700,000 in grants. Ranging from $15,000 to $100,000 in value, the awards are divided into four categories—Artistic Production Grants, Incubator Grants, the 2019 VIA Curatorial Fellowship, and the 2018 Frontier Art Prize.

“2018 was a seminal year for VIA, defined by another outstanding group of grantees and the announcement of the expansion of our Incubator Grant Program with a five-year, $1 million Incubator Grant Fund in partnership with Boston’s Wagner Foundation,” Bridgitt Evans, president and founder of VIA Art Fund, said in a statement. “We are looking forward to 2019, which will see an increased impact across our grantmaking efforts.”

During 2018, VIA Art Fund awarded eight Artistic Production Grants totaling $600,000 for the production, exhibition, and accessioning of works of art. Among the projects supported were Kevin Beasley’s installation A View of a Landscape, which is currently on view at the Whitney Museum of American Art; David Hammons’s permanent public art sculptural installation Day’s End along the Hudson River in New York; Martin Puryear’s presentation at the United States pavilion at the Fifty-Eighth Venice Biennale; and Alicja Kwade’s new work for her first major solo show in North America at the MIT List Visual Arts Center.

The organization also awarded seven grants totaling $105,000 to small arts nonprofits, named the Institute of Contemporary Art Los Angeles curator Jamillah James as the 2019 VIA Curatorial Fellow and Tavares Strachan as the 2018 Frontier Art Prize, and helped acquire two works for public collections: John Akomfrah’s Precarity for the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University and Daniel Buren’s Voile/Toile–Toile/Voile for the Walker Art Center.
