Wolfgang Orthmayr Appointed Interim Managing Director of Documenta

Catherine Hickley of the Art Newspaper reports that Wolfgang Orthmayr—formerly the commercial director of Stage Entertainment GmbH, a company that produces musicals—has been appointed Documenta’s interim managing director. Orthmayr comes to the organization after a rather contentious period, when the exhibition was accused of financial mismanagement (the previous edition, Documenta 14, had amassed a deficit of about $8.3 million).

The city of Kassel, which hosts Documenta, underlined that Orthmayr’s position is only temporary until someone “with relevant experience and competence in the field of cultural management” can be found. He succeeds Annette Kulenkampff, who resigned last November, a year before her contract ended. Her departure prompted artists, curators, and other arts professionals to pen an open letter, which urged the exhibition’s board to reinstate her. It also called for the establishement of an international advisory board and demanded that Documenta retain its nonprofit status.
