Victim of the attack

Woman Stabbed with X-Acto Knife at Art Basel Miami Beach

A woman was stabbed by another woman with an X-Acto knife in the arms and neck at an Art Basel exhibit in Miami Beach at 5:15 PM Friday evening, report the Miami Herald’s Daniel Chang, Nicholas Nehamas, and Jordan Levin.

The attack occurred after an altercation escalated between the victim and suspect, whom the victim confronted for following her around the fair and intentionally bumping into her a few times. The suspect has since been taken into custody by Miami Beach Police, and according to NBC, she’s now facing an attempted murder charge. While being detained, she reportedly stated, “I had to kill her and two more!” and “I had to watch her bleed!” Miami Beach police spokeswoman and detective Kathleen Prieto said that the injuries are non-life-threatening, and the victim has been transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital.

The stabbing happened at the NOVA section of the fair, in a corridor near an art installation entitled “The Swamp of Sagittarius,” by Miami artist Naomi Fisher, who told the Herald, “A guy walked up to me and said, ‘I thought I saw a performance, and I thought it was fake blood, but it was real blood.’” The area near the Washington Avenue entrance to the convention center has now been cordoned off.

Gregg Hill, a New York artist present during the attack, said, “I never would have thought there would be a stabbing at Art Basel.” He added, “People didn't really know what had happened. It was calm and everyone was milling around and talking.”
