Dr. Richard F. Brown, Director of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, was elected president of the College Art Association of America at the CAA’s annual meeting in Philadelphia last month. . . . The Pasadena Art Museum has announced the appointment of Walter M. Hopps as the new director. Hopps, at 31, thus becomes the youngest director of a major art museum in the nation. . . . The San Francisco Art Institute announced that Peter Selz, curator of painting and sculpture at the Museum of Modern Art will select the winners of $5000 in prizes to be awarded out of the 1946 San Francisco Art Association Annual. . . . Karla Moss and Jerrold Ballaine were awarded $75.00 prizes for their entries in the “Square Drawings” exhibition at the San Francisco Art Institute. . . . “Icarus,” a cast aluminum sculpture by Bruce Beasley was selected by Andre Malraux for purchase by the French government for permanent exhibition in the Paris Museum of Modern Art. . . . Gregory Gillespie is one of the 23 contemporary American artists who showed in the 14th annual exhibition of candidates for the National Institute of Arts and Letters awards program. . . . L.A. artist Pat Berger’s oil, “Beach People,” was purchased by the Ford Foundation out of the 159th Annual of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. . . . Ken Starbird received an honorable mention in the same exhibition.
