WE ARE TALKING WITH DONALD KUSPIT.

DK: If you look at the history of 20th-century art, you find incredibly shortened periods of development, insistent novelty. We think of a traditional artist having a beginning, middle, and end. The beginning period he’s apprenticed, the middle period he comes into his own, the end he either repeats himself or goes back to elements in the beginning that he didn’t fully develop and articulate then. With the Modern artist we think of breakthrough and good-bye. So he ages quickly, since everything is tied to a breakthrough. One thing that is required, then, is a changing time consciousness, a longer look at art. But I don’t think we can control that. I think what many artists today are doing is taking an image which is old-young at once or young-old at once, and actually freezing it, fast-freezing it, dry-freezing it, putting it on dry ice.
