LS: The love affair that you have with the 19th century, does it translate as a love affair with today? Or is it different?

RR: Well, my love affair is with history. I love art and I love history. And I love bleeps on the screen of history. I like things that don’t fit and I like things being constantly susceptible to new constructions. But what—this is personal taste—what I hate most of all is a fixed ideology and a closed system, because these have no correspondence as far as I can see with any kind of human or historical reality.

One of the things that I grew up being taught to dislike was historicism. You were taught that 19th-century architecture, insofar as it used an eclectic vocabulary to make you think of ancient Greece or Rome or the Middle Ages, was bad.
