IS: Do you still have the very first issue of Artforum, Number 1, Volume 1, June 1962? The first piece of writing in it, “On Criticism,” is by you, and it begins with a quote from something you wrote in your magazine Scrap.

SG: I’ve got issue number 1 some place in my studio.

TME: One thing we wanted to talk with you about was some of the things in that first issue. I wondered if you remembered the article by a certain Lester D. Longman called “Conformity in the Arts.”

SG: Not really. That issue was published 26 years ago in California, and I was a visitor out there by chance. I even forget what brought me out there. But because of Scrap, which Anita Ventura and I published and which the people starting Artforum liked, they asked me to sit in on a meeting.

We published Scrap not so much to have our own magazine, but to have an artists’ forum, a place for artists
