SOUL THING: A PROJECT FOR ARTFORUM

I love soul singing but I can’t sing at all, so I paint. Maybe I’m a soul painter? I respond to little things in people, those differences that make them individual, charismatic. They dazzle and seem so powerful—it’s the power of spirit. These miniature portraits of faces float on a sea of white paper, placed in a way that seems to make sense for each person and their relationship to the huge world. In these paintings I visit these special qualities and respond to what I see and feel with touches of color. The portraits beckon in a quiet way: Come closer, take a look. And they kind of say, To really see me takes some effort, some patience, some concentration. They also keep a person’s spirit with you. But they’re small—you don’t have to look at them all the time. They’re just there, like your dog at your feet.
