EVEN THOUGH IT’S STILL tough to go online in the subway, news is one of the hottest attractions on the Web, and online news offers some stuff the dailies can’t. Search pages provide customized news (more or less), and MSN does, too; push programs like Pointcast deliver regularly updated reports to your desktop, with a selection of “channels” to choose from; and an ever-growing assortment of ’bots will download your news pages of choice so you don’t have to. Eventually, you’ll be able to get the news you want and nothing else. In the meantime, there are a few news sources that are worth a browse: some are already big names, and some should be.

Mark Van de Walle writes regularly for Artforum.
