(Sacred Figure from the Maprik Hills, Sepik River Region. Each clan of the Abelam people owns one of these very sacred figures which are believed to be inhabited by spirits. (kwa: minyan) magically created by the old men. The spirits in the figures are expected to endow the initiated with the power to grow yams successfully. Throughout the yam growing season the figures are given offerings, and paint is scraped from them to use in yam magic.)
