While the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague is closed until fall of ’98 for major restoration, the museum’s huge Mondrian holdings won’t go unseen. In this survey, the Tate Gallery shows a selection of sixty-odd works from the Dutch museum’s collection of the modern master’s canvases. Strong in the early and middle periods of his work, the Gemeentemuseum’s holdings are complemented by significant loans to pinpoint the artist’s development from early landscapes in the Netherlands to new beginnings in New York. Bridget Riley, assisted by Sean Rainbird of the Tate, has made this dynamic choice from the work of an artist who has long been one of the British painter’s invincible heroes. July 26-Nov. 30
