Stan Douglas: Overture and Monodramas

Museo Alejandro Otero
Complejo Cultural La Rinconada
November 16, 1997–January 12, 1998

With its wealthy museums, talented curators, and growing audience of supportive collectors, Caracas seemed to be on its way to becoming a major South American venue for art in the early ’90s. Now, with the end to the economic crisis that put these expectations on hold, Caracas may yet again be emerging as an important art center. One sign of the city’s rejuvenation: the Museo Alejandro Otero’s exhibition of Stan Douglas’ work, the first museum show of the Canadian artist’s films and videos south of the Rio Grande. In this comprehensive survey, curator Jesus Fuenmayor attempts to establish a parallel between the articulation of modernity in contexts considered to be marginal (Venezuela, Canada) with regard to the so-called centers.
