How do the Finns understand themselves? That’s the question posed by curator Maaretta Jaukkuri in “This Side of the Ocean,” the debut show in the main galleries of Helsinki’s new Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art. The exhibition presents works by a dozen Finnish artists (including photographer Esko Männikkö, filmmaker Aki Kaurismäki, and video artist Eija-Liisa Ahtila) that all, according to the organizers, convey a certain “Finnishness.” (Less concerned with finish and more with process are Tommi Grönlund, Carl Michael von Hausswolff, and Petteri Nisunen, who are collaborating in a concurrent show that promises to turn the museum’s Kontti Gallery into a playground of bad technology and good vibrations.)
