• David Reed: Paintings

Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego | Downtown
    1100 and 1001 Kettner Boulevard
    September 20, 1998–January 7, 1999

Long fascinated with the possibilities opened up by incorporating photographic and cinematic effects in abstract painting, David Reed has lately been complicating his work by exhibiting his paintings alongside video clips of classic film scenes in which, through the magic of technology, the same canvases have been slipped into the decor. Reed has always been appreciated by fellow artists, but his first American retrospective, curated by the MCA’s Elizabeth Armstrong and including forty paintings dating from 1974 to 1998 as well as several installations, should earn him the broader public profile he deserves. The catalogue brings together texts by Armstrong, Dave Hickey, Mieke Bal, Paul Auster, and the artist.
