For Wallinger, the cultural baggage of Britishness is both vantage point and object of scrutiny. He describes this show of recent work as “a trip through the looking glass, to test the limits of language and perception.” Wallinger certainly shares three of Lewis Carroll’s abiding interests: word games, things seen in reverse, and God. Curator Marie-Thérèse Champesme’s show brings together two major video installations (On an Operating Table, 1998, and The Importance of Being Earnest in Esperanto, 1996), several sculptures, and The Four Corners of the Earth, 1998, a slide projection on four round canvases, in which Wallinger’s metaphysical ruminations are characteristically mediated by a measure of Anglo empiricism and wit.
