“El Lissitzky: Beyond the Abstract ”

Sprengel Museum Hannover
Kurt-Schwitters-Platz
January 17–May 4, 1999

Although Lissitzky is best known as a painter, sculptor, and graphic artist, here Margarita Tupitsyn and Thomas Wesk (of the Sprengel) focus on the artist’s work with photography and photo-montage. Comprising over 300 items from 1922–41, some of them previously unknown, the exhibition ranges from abstract photograms to family portraits to propaganda imagery, and brings into focus the artist’s relationship with the filmmaker Dziga Vertov and his collaboration with other photographers on various design projects. The catalogue includes essays by Tupitsyn, the Guggenheim's Matthew Drutt, and Ulrich Pohlmann. Jan.17–May 4; travels to Museu D’Art Contemporani, Barcelona, July 5–Sept. 5; and Fundação de Serralves, Porto, Portugal, Sept. 16–Nov. 7
