Unnatural Science
Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA)
87 Marshall Street
June 3, 2000–March 15, 2001
Mutant mammals and crazy chain reactions are promised in this blockbuster, an exploration of the uses and abuses of scientific theory and practice by contemporary artists. Young Sun Lim's 1998-99 Room of the Hosttwo hundred jars containing squirming silicone creatureswill rub tentacles with Kiki Smith's Constellation, 1996, and video-art pioneer Steina Vasulka's Borealis, 1993, the latter an alien world evolved from electronically manipulated sounds and images of the Icelandic landscape. Assembled by curator Laura Heon, these ontological oddities will show alongside a sprawling, organic Tim Hawkinson assemblage, never before seen on this planet (or indeed any other).
