RE-PLAY: Beginnings of International Media Art in Austria

Generali Foundation
Wiedner Hauptstraße 15
May 12–August 6, 2000

With this ambitious multimedia show, curators Sabine Breitwieser and Heidi Grundmann focus on work from the late '60s to the early '80s, juxtaposing Austrian artists (Ernst Caramelle, Valie Export, Friederike Pezold, and Peter Weibel) with their internationally better-known counterparts (Vito Acconci, Laurie Anderson, Shigeko Kubota, and Joan Jonas). Including some 25 video-and-audio installations, telecommunication projects, and 180 single-channel videos, the exhibition should offer a fresh perspective on the conventional narrative of video history and prove that Vienna is home to more than one political ideology. A comprehensive catalogue accompanies the show.
