  • Vincent van Gogh and the Painters of the Petit Boulevard

    Saint Louis Art Museum
One Fine Arts Drive Forest Park
    February 17–September 2, 2001

There’s no end to van Gogh exhibitions, but each one seems to reveal a new aspect of his brief genius. Often viewed as a loner, van Gogh in fact loved to talk shop. During the months he spent in Paris before touching down in Arles, he met nearly all the innovative artists of his period, the petit boulevard painters (as opposed to Monet or Renoir, already masters of the grand boulevard). Saint Louis’s loan show explores van Gogh’s work alongside contemporaries Emile Bernard, Paul Signac, and Louis Anquetin and examines his more famous, full-bodied interaction with Gauguin in Provence.
