Quadrennial? Maybe it’s time you added the word to your vocabulary, because Jan Hoet and his pals at the Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst Gent already have—and they’re serious about it. The first installment of this Belgian quadrennial of contemporary art, curated by New York gallerist Jeanne Greenberg Rohatyn, includes more than fifty international artists. Referencing the fact that the SMAK building previously housed a casino, the show emphasizes the theatrical and extravagant sides of popular culture. Among the invited, most of whom came of age during the ’70s, are Franz Ackermann, Emmanuelle Antille, Keith Edmier, Kendell Geers, Sarah Morris, and Paul Pfeiffer.
