Hans Haacke
Generali Foundation
Wiedner Hauptstraße 15
September 7–December 20, 2001
In 1988 and 1996, New York–based artist Hans Haacke developed projects in Graz concerning the problematic political situation in Austria, and since that time things have only gotten worse, with Jörg Haider and the reactionary FPÖ party’s ascent to power last year. No doubt Haacke will use the political backdrop to his advantage. Organized by Sabine Breitwieser, this exhibition—the artist’s first major show in Vienna—addresses the construction of national identity, bringing together a series of older works and a brand new installation titled Mia san mia—“We are who we are.” The message should be clear in this city, a place where political memory and cultural identity are grave matters today.
