Richard Hamilton/Dieter Roth: Collaborations, Relations, Confrontations
Fondacao de Serralves
Rua de Serralves
October 18–December 31, 2002
Curated by Vicente Todolí
Though Dieter Roth is no longer with us, he still made the cut for this year’s Documenta just as he did in Harald Szeemann’s 1999 Venice Biennale. Perhaps the enthusiastic re-reception of Roth’s work will extend to that of his friend and sometime collaborator Richard Hamilton, who recently turned eighty. Their joint efforts in 1965 are the focus of this four-hundred-work survey curated by the Fundação de Serralves’s Vicente Todolí, who will soon relocate to London as the new director of Tate Modern. The show also includes solo works by the two artists, highlighting their similarities—and differences.
