From his early “scratch sessions” employing multiple turntables—which anticipated the art world’s fascination with DJ culture by more than a decade—to the acclaimed four-screen DVD-projection installation Video Quartet, 2002, Christian Marclay has for twenty years occupied the cutting edge between art and music. Hammer chief curator Russell Ferguson’s survey of the artist’s promiscuous output brings together, for the first time in an American museum, a body of work that continues to resist categorization. The catalogue features essays by, among others, art historian Miwon Kwon and musician Alan Licht.
