The Interventionists: Art in the Social Sphere

Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA)

    May 29, 2004–March 1, 2005

    Curated by Nato Thompson

During the ’90s, artists’ participatory strategies were notoriously shy when it came to political engagement; today, a socially reoriented position is on the rise and gaining institutional recognition. This exhibition presents twenty-eight artists and collaborative groups whose work represents an attempt to reinvent the neo-avant-garde experience of the ’60s and the critical practices of the ’80s within today’s cultural and political context. Exploring the connections among art, globalization, and political struggle, the show establishes a possible genealogy for the work presented (from Lucy Orta to the Reverend Billy to Dre Wapenaar) while acknowledging the continuing expansion of contemporary art’s methods and audiences.
