Anselm Kiefer

Collection Lambert en Avignon
5 rue Violette
June 26–October 23, 2005

Curated by Eric Mézil

Although he settled firmly (and one hears grandly) in the south of France thirteen years ago, Anselm Kiefer is still underknown, as they used to say, in his adopted country. Now, the Collection Lambert, situated in Avignon’s Hôtel de Caumont not far from Kiefer’s own primary nest, is mounting his first major French exhibition in over twenty years, a retrospective of the artist’s work from the 1970s to the present. The show includes one hundred huge paintings, gouaches, lead books, and monumental sculptures, as well as “specially created” new works. Will France fall for him? The timing might be right: If you start thinking about their work in a certain light, both Christian Boltanski and Annette Messager start seeming somehow Kieferesque.
