    “2008 California Biennial”

    Orange County Museum of Art
    1661 W. Sunflower Ave.
    October 26, 2008–March 29, 2009

    Curated by Lauri Firstenberg

Organized by guest curator Lauri Firstenberg, founder and director of LAXART in Los Angeles, this year’s California Biennial is more expansive, far-reaching, and ambitious than ever before. The show features works by about fifty artists and collaboratives as well as, for the first time, numerous off-site artists’ projects and performances staged at venues in a wide range of West Coast locales, from Tijuana to San Francisco. Employing a popular biennial strategy, Firstenberg pairs influential and established figures (often artist-teachers in regional art schools), from Mary Kelly and Yvonne Rainer to Daniel Joseph Martinez and Andrea Zittel, with approximately thirty emerging artists in an effort to foster an “inter-generationalism” that suggests artistic lineages.
