Curated by Catherine de Zegher and Gerald McMaster

For Sydney’s eighteenth biennale, curators Catherine de Zegher and Gerald McMaster have proposed the theme “All Our Relations,” imagining the world as a complex, “breathing organism”—a cybernetic aggregation of specialized components meant to work in concert. This festival boasts a fully transnational corps, comprising some hundred artists and collectives. But while such art-circuit stars as Guido van der Werve (the Netherlands) and Robin Rhode (South Africa) factor in, a sense of the global in this exhibition is mostly conveyed via an array of less widely known, more regionally focused practices. Gao Rong (China), Juan Manuel (Colombia), and Jananne Al-Ani (Iraq) join local favorites Nyapanyapa Yunupingu, Tim Johnson, and Judy Watson to address a range of landmark Sydney venues, including the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, and the beguiling Cockatoo Island.
