A leading figure of Conceptual art in Central and Eastern Europe, Mladen Stilinović now enjoys his first solo exhibition in Mexico—a major presentation of more than sixty works that spans the past forty years. Taking full stock of the artist’s practice, “1+2≡” will feature his collages, photographs, installations, and paintings, including such iconic pieces as Artist at Work, 1977, and An Artist who does not speak English is not an Artist, 1992, as well as his early, lesser-known experiments in poetry and film. Throughout his career, Stilinović has proved himself a formidable analyst of the ideological signs and mechanisms of power that shape modern society, whether in socialist Yugoslavia or under today’s global capitalism. Yet his work is never dry: He always leaves ample room for irony and wit.
