The title of the twentieth Biennale of Sydney, a quote attributed to William Gibson, underscores the exhibition’s focus on issues of access under advanced capitalism: access to material resources, to power, to capital, to new social imaginaries, and to ourselves. More than seventy international artists, among them boychild, Boris Charmatz, Cevdet Erek, Ming Wong, and Otobong Nkanga, will show works—mostly new commissions—in a wide range of media, with an emphasis on performance. Projects will be exhibited throughout the city, primarily at seven central sites designated as “embassies of thought” (including the embassies of “Spirits,” “Non-Participation,” and “Translation”). Rosenthal conceives of these states-within-a-state less as scaffolding for a broad geopolitical agenda than as a framework for temporary, situated considerations of our current moment.
